Wavy Alabaster

Hi.

Welcome to my open journal. Read, sip and stay awhile. Cheers.

pap's overalls

pap's overalls

I’m just a farmer, plain and simple.
Not of royal birth, but rather a worker of the earth.
I know not of riches, but rather of patches on my britches.

I’m just a farmer, plain and simple.
I know of drought and rain, of pleasure and pain.
I know the good, the bad, the happy and the sad.

I’m a man of emotions.
A man who loves this land and the beauty of its sand.
I’m just a farmer, plain and simple.

I know the spring’s fresh flow and autumn’s golden glow.
Of a new born calf’s hesitation and an eagle’s destination.
I’m just a farmer, plain and simple.

I know of tall pines and long waiting lines.
I know the warmth of campfires and the agony of flat tires.
I’m just a farmer, plain and simple.

I’m a man who loves his job.
And the life that I live.
I’m just a farmer, plain and simple.

Excerpt from I'm just a Farmer, Plain and Simple by Bobby Collier

I am not a farmer. My husband's grandfather was the farmer. He was also an auctioneer, milk truck driver, husband, father, brother, grandfather, hero. These are his overalls.

I was gifted these overalls. Actually, it is more like they found me. Vertical stripes, over-sized, a high-bib with "Sears" stamped on the front buttons. Was this a match-made in hand-me-down heaven? Left leg through, then right and as I reached around and up to hook the right suspender, I knew it was a perfect fit. My face lit up like a Pittsburgh Pirates fireworks night! My in-laws just could not deny me this piece of clothing after my genuine and quite enthusiastic reaction.

Pap, the first owner, carried himself with honesty and a quiet honor on a daily basis. The cotton since has soaked up those characteristics and I consider myself lucky to absorb a little piece of him every time I slip on this striped one piece. This feeling, this sense of pride, I could not withhold from his actual grandchildren. So I rounded up my husband and his siblings and strutted them out to the the family farm. The farm where Pap called home for numerous decades. Each of us took a turn in the overalls. One by one, we explored, immersed, and paid a small, yet significant, tribute to an incredible man.

Cheers, Jessa
